Weber’s Restaurant and Hotel defies the odds, maintaining a strong succession plan for the past 80 years.

My father, Herman Weber, began his career in the hospitality industry in the 1930s as a dishwasher at a local restaurant. He had planned to use the money he saved to buy a car, but instead leased a bankrupt diner that had come onto the market. At only 25 years old, Dad was in business for himself!

More than 75 years later, my father’s legacy lives on at Weber’s Restaurant and Hotel in Ann Arbor, Mich., the establishment my parents founded in 1937. It was an eatery before it was a hotel, and was recently ranked among the best hotels in the country by CollegeRank.net and in the world by Expedia.com. Today, I serve as president, and two of my sons, Michael and Brian Weber, are vice presidents of the hotel and restaurant, respectively.

My sister and I heard about the daily happenings at Weber’s at the family dinner table every night. We were at the restaurant constantly, getting to know the staff and later working there ourselves. As I grew up and started my own family, I knew my future was in the family business, as did my sons.

How do you know which IT solution is the best for you?

We’ve had our fair share of technology issues in our 80-year history. In the early 1980s, we had an optical scanning system. The technology scanned restaurant orders from a special sheet of paper by recognizing the presence of a pencil mark made by employees, not too different from the Scantron system many colleges use to score tests.

But we had issues processing orders. If there was even a spot of grease on the paper, the scanning technology would not be able to read the order requests.

“That technology was not the wave of the future,” says Michael Weber, vice president of Weber’s. “It ended up flopping. It was a disaster.”

We’ve been operating since before digital computers were invented. Weber’s originally tracked purchases and inventory by hand.

“As an entrepreneur, you have to pay attention to different technology trends and how people want to spend their money,” Weber said. “It will put your business ahead of others. Whenever you’re dealing with new technology, you want to try to see into the future and go with what will still be relevant in 10 years,” said Weber.

Working for Weber’s is a tradition for family!

When did you realize running the family business was your destiny?

We were born into it. Growing up, whenever there was a breakfast or dinner and we were at the kitchen table we were hearing what was going on at work and the issues of the day. My parents worked there every day. My sister and I, when we were 10 years old, we started working in the business. As time went on, it just seemed natural that I’d want to continue it.

Two of your sons are in the business now. Will you sell to them? Is Weber’s their inheritance?

There certainly is a need for them to get ownership in the business and we’re working in that direction.

So they want to take over the business?

Yes. It’s to the point now, we’re into the third generation and there’s a lot of pride in understanding how few family-run businesses last that long and how everything is being brought up by the real estate investment trusts. Basically, we just have a stubborn independence to make Weber’s a pertinent place in Ann Arbor.

Do you have a succession plan?

Yes, we do. Right now, we’re developing Michael and Brian. Michael has been with the business six years, and Brian just came back six months ago. They are young, smart and eager.

The alley remains a unique place for artists and has continued to evolve as new artists leave their mark.
3. Wave Field – The pattern mimics the mathematical sine waves designed by artist Maya Lin. The crisscrossing rows of verdant berms outside of the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Building (FXB) were built using the simplest landscaping tool: dirt. 
4. Hell, Michigan - There isn’t much to see in Hell outside of the many joking signs. However, the downtown general store offers unusual gifts and knickknacks bearing the town’s name for a fun souvenir.  You can also become “Mayor of Hell” for one day, receiving a key to the city for just $100.

Travel Hacks to Make Your Flight More Comfortable!

Flying on a budget but still want to be comfortable? Looking for tips to make flying better? Could you use a few simple hacks to fly more comfortably? 

When you’re not prepared, flying economy can be a potentially uncomfortable experience. On most airlines, the seats are getting smaller, the snacks are skimpier, and you have little control of your surroundings. But there are a few things you can do to make your flight better. Be prepared with these travel hacks and fly more comfortably. 

1. Choose Wisely: If you can spare a few more dollars, you can usually get seats with a little extra leg room; this is a great option for really long flights. Or keep the money in your pocket and consider choosing seats at the back of the plane. In these seats you won’t have anyone behind you potentially kicking you right in the back! For a potentially roomier flight, before take-off, be on the lookout for open seats and ask an attendant if you can move. 
2. Blackout: One of the best ways to pass the time on a flight is sleeping. You can fall asleep easier with a sleeping mask and earplugs or headphones. Follow the lead of the woman in the photo that recently went viral and hang a note around your neck asking to be woken up for snacks!
3. Be Special: On long flights with meals, if you order something special, like the vegetarian option, your food will be one of the first to come out! You’ll be satisfied with a full belly and also be feeling special for the VIP treatment. 
4. Pillows: Most of us already know about the U-shaped neck pillows, and they’re really worth the investment if you fly semi-regularly. But you could also consider shoving a small, light pillow in your carryon for lumbar support or even a little extra cushion for your behind. 
5. Hydration: between forgetting to drink water in the chaos of travelling and the bone-dry cabin, we all get dried-out when we travel. So, bring water, buy water, and drink water on the day and throughout the flight and you’ll feel way better at the end of the day. Consider packing lotion and lip balm in your carryon, too.
