Famous Historical Events in Ann Arbor, Michigan!

What is Ann Arbor, Michigan known for?

Have any historical events happened here?

Most downtown areas have a history and Ann Arbor is no exception.

In 1960, both presidential candidates, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, spoke during the presidential election in Ann Arbor, Michigan. On October 14, 1960, Kennedy outlined his proposal for the Peace Corps on the front steps of the Michigan Union. A plaque still marks the spot!

Other presidents have also paid visits to Ann Arbor, including Lyndon B. Johnson, Barack Obama, Gerald R. Ford, and Grover Cleveland. LBJ unveiled his Great Society initiative during a University of Michigan commencement address on May 22, 1964. Gerald R. Ford – a former student and college football player at the University of Michigan – opened his Presidential Library in Ann Arbor. His museum is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Ann Arbor was home to many influential rock bands, like the MC5, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Brownsville Station, George Clinton, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Mitch Ryder, and The Rationals. Even Madonna was a dance major at the University of Michigan in the late 1970s!

We love Ann Arbor and all it has to offer! In 2010, Forbes listed Ann Arbor as one of the most livable cities in the United States. Beg to differ? We’d love to hear what you think!
